From the album "Yüz"
Naim Records (2007)

Review by J. D. Naylor on Amazon UK

Nicloas Meier first came to my attention with his fine album "Orient" released a couple of years ago which combined centomporary jazz with world music. This album sees him take a step further into world music territory and what a great step it is too.Where "Orient" had the tenor sax talents of Dave O'Higgins and the American Rob Lavers as well as Gilad Atzmon, this album sees Atzmon as the lone horn in this quartet setting and he is superb.Often a very fast and fiery player Atzmon sticks mainly to soprano with the clarinet being used on a couple of occasions and personally i have never heard him play better. He manages to make the soprano sound completely different to the way any other musician plays it. He sounds bleak, haunting and mysterious on the slower numbers and shrill and exciting on the up-tempo and more passionate numbers.

Meier himself is no slouch on the guitar and sticks mainy to acoustic guitar and occasionaly the Turkish saz and his soloing is lyrical, very nimble fingered and quite flameco'ish in style.

All tunes on this album have that world music feel to them drawing on Middle eastern,Eastern European and Latin American for their influences and with musicains of this quality they have really pulled it off in a major way.Meier must be applauded for branching out on his own and making this highly origional and enjoyable music.

If you get the chance to see them live then i suggest you do so but otherwise make yourself content with the purchase of this great c.d.

Not for straight ahead jazz fans really but a must for those that have enjoyed John Mclaughlin's acoustic work, the Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and Mukta the Indian Raga influenced band.

Terrific stuff.
